Katherine Castillo Alferez describes her character as continuously smiling at all living things, people, animals, plants, and even objects or situations that just catch her attention.
This has been her superpower and source of artistry. However, it wasn’t until she moved to Sydney, where she fully got to enhance her inspiration by the symbiotic relationship between the city life and its animals in the wild. There is an urge to create, is the summary of feelings in that particular moment, that get her to put things together, without necessarily having a logical connection.
The work transforms itself depending on the communication created by the rapturous delight of the emotions. Katherine loves to explore the abstract form prevalent in her surrealistic pieces, regardless, her direction continues to be influenced by the sensual forms of figurative art.
“Observation is the first tool I hold, to then listen to what the artwork has to say back to me, with its textures, colours and contours. To gradually evolve towards an advanced stage of the dreamed piece. SURREALISM, as they call it!! This has been my Modus vivendi for the sanity of my artistic self.
The creative process of Katherine’s sculptural work, starts with modelling different kinds of clays depending on the size and complexity of each creation, to afterwards make the moulds out of the sculptures, allowing each piece to be cast in different last longer materials, like bronze.
By having a main sculpture body that can be casted multiple times, but then, on each time, giving her the freedom to manually modify her work, one by one in a completely unique way depending on the idea, intention and state of mind at the time. Makes each copy a single original artwork of the same piece or series.
Each particular commission can be modified if desired, measurements are displayed for guidance but they can vary depending on the order.
